Each row is the provider's own published figure, opened by Pete on 3 October 2026. Polyp removal, histology, sedation and the consultant fee are often extra unless the row says they are included. The hospital's written quote is what counts. We delete any row we cannot re-check. A listed provider is not necessarily a partner of ours. Every source is on Sources.

What we can and cannot do

This is not medical advice. We are not a clinic and not the NHS. We do not perform the test, diagnose, refer, or hold a slot. We cannot tell you whether a colonoscopy is right for you.

Worried about bowel symptoms? Contact a GP, and call 999 or go to A&E for heavy bleeding, black stools with collapse, or severe pain.

If you have been referred on a two-week wait, keep that appointment. Two-week-wait and NHS bowel screening referrals are NHS routes. A private colonoscopy is a separate, paid option. If you are offered an urgent NHS referral, take it.

What we can do: explain the price, the referral rule and the hospital types in plain English. If you ask, we pass your request to one independent hospital or clinic that covers your area so it can contact you. That is free for you. The hospital may pay us a fee.

Four steps to a private colonoscopy

  1. What the price includes. Ask whether the quote covers the consultation, sedation, polyp removal, histology (the lab test on any tissue taken) and the consultant's fee. These are often extra. See what is included.
  2. Referral rule. Most hospitals want a GP or consultant letter. A few clinics offer a consultation first that includes a referral if needed. See GP letter.
  3. Hospital type. Hospital group, charitable hospital, or diagnostic clinic. Compare the from-price, what it includes and the referral rule in the price table.
  4. Ask one hospital to contact you. Use the form. One partner hospital may call or email you. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and price with them.

If you have been referred on a two-week wait, keep that appointment.

A partner hospital may call or email you. We may be paid for the introduction. This is not a confirmed appointment and not a diagnosis.

Can I refer myself for a private colonoscopy?

At a few clinics. Vista Health lets you book a consultation yourself, and that consultation includes a referral if needed. Welbeck does not accept self-referral for this test. Nuffield Health asks for a GP or consultant referral.

Do insured patients need a GP letter for a colonoscopy?

Usually. Ask your insurer before you book. Many policies want a GP referral and an authorisation number.

Can I go private if I am waiting for an NHS colonoscopy?

Yes, as a separate, paid option. If you have been referred on a two-week wait, keep that appointment. Do not cancel an NHS appointment for a private one.

Who decides whether I need a colonoscopy?

A GP or a specialist. We do not, and this site is not medical advice.

Which providers take self-referral for a colonoscopy?

Few, on the pages we opened on 3 October 2026.

  • Vista Health (Bristol): you can book a consultation yourself. The £225 consultation includes a referral if one is needed.
  • Welbeck (London): you must be referred by a GP or a gastroenterologist. Self-referrals are not accepted for this test.
  • Nuffield Health: its pages say you need a referral letter from a GP, or a referral from a consultant.
  • One Stop Healthcare: its page says the first step is a referral from your GP.
  • Spire, Circle and St John & St Elizabeth: the price pages we opened do not state a rule. Spire's prices include a first consultation with a consultant. Ask the hospital.

What if I am paying with insurance?

Ask your insurer before you book anything. Insurers usually want a GP referral, and they may give you an authorisation number for the hospital. Check whether the policy covers the consultation, the test, sedation and histology.

What if my GP has already referred me on the NHS?

If you have been referred on a two-week wait, keep that appointment. An NHS referral, including one from bowel screening, is an NHS route. A private colonoscopy is a separate, paid option. Tell your GP if you decide to pay privately as well.

What if I have not seen a GP about my symptoms?

Contact a GP, and call 999 or go to A&E for heavy bleeding, black stools with collapse, or severe pain. A GP can examine you, arrange NHS tests, and write a letter if you then want a private test.

Can a private GP refer me?

Some hospital groups run private GP services, and a private GP can usually write a referral. That is a separate cost. Ask the hospital whether it accepts a private GP's letter.
